What browser version should I be using?

A browser is a program used to view information on the Internet. In order to take advantage of all functions and features of the Web sites you visit, it is important to have the most current version of your browser installed on your computer. The two commonest browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, which can be downloaded free of charge.

Where is . . . located?

You can either look at the Site Map or search for the item on the Search page. To return to an article in which you are particularly interested, use your Favorites or Bookmark function to create a direct link to that article.

How does the Search function work?

Click the Search button on any page, type your search term(s) into the Search text box, and click Search. The Search engine will seek out pages that contain all of your search terms throughout the entire content of the ACP Journal Club Web site. To improve your search, follow the helpful hints located at the bottom of the Search page.

How can I improve the display of ACP Journal Club Web pages?

In order to best view the ACP Journal Club Web site, your monitor should be set to a minimum screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels; for optimum viewing, 1024 x 768 pixels is recommended. For Windows users, click the Start button, choose Settings/ Control Panels/ Display/ Settings, and move the cursor under the Desktop Area to the right until the appropriate resolution appears. For Macintosh users, select the Monitors control panel from the Apple menu and select the appropriate screen resolution from Options.

Why am I having problems with some menus?

If you are having trouble with menus, it may be that your browser is outdated. If you are using Netscape's Communicator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer, you can upgrade your browser, at no cost, to the latest version available for your computer. Microsoft's Internet Explorer can be downloaded from Microsoft's Download page. Netscape's Communicator can be downloaded from Netscape's Automatic Software Upgrade page.

What can I do when the font (type) is too small to read online and when I print something?

If you are using Internet Explorer 5, go to the Tools menu and choose Internet Options. Click on Accessibility at the bottom of the screen. Click in the box for "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages." Then go to the View menu and from Text Size choose a more legible font size.

If you are using Netscape 6, open the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Under the Appearance category choose Font. You can select both a serif and sans serif font and size as your defaults. Then select "Always use my font settings, overriding what web pages specify." You can also adjust the readability of fonts by typing in a number in the field next to "Font display resolution." 96 dots per inch (dpi) is the standard; you can choose a larger value.

If you are using an earlier version of either browser, consult the Help menu for information on changing font size. If you wish to upgrade your browser, click on either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator to download the latest version.

Why do some pages appear on the screen more rapidly than others?

Your disk drive includes a "cache" where browsers temporarily store Web pages that you have already displayed. If you return to a page already stored in the cache, your browser checks that the page has not been changed on the Web site since it was stored in the cache. If it is unchanged, the browser retrieves the local version from the cache rather than re-downloadng from the Internet. Caches are periodically purged by the browser in order to keep performance optimum.
